Prostate Infection

What is Prostatitis?

Prostatitis is the inflammation of the prostate gland and affects men of all ages. The most common cause of prostatitis is a bacteria infection that invades the prostate from some other are in the body. Prostatitis caused by bacteria can usually be brought under control with antibiotics or natural supplements.

Prostatitiis can affect men of every age and it is estimated that 50% of men will experience this disorder at some point or time in their life. Prostatitis is the most common urological disorder found in men over the age of 50 and is the third most common in men under younger than 50. According to the National Institutes of Health, prostatitis cases are reported in 25% of all office visits involving the genitourinary system by young and middle-aged men.

Hormonal changes associated with aging may also be a factor or play in important role in the development of Prostatitis. This inflammation can lead to urine retention which causes the bladder to become weak, tender, distended and vulnerable to infection.  When your bladder does not empty completely, it can cause damage to your kidneys.

Types of Prostate Infections

There are four types of prostate infections, with acute and chronic being the most common form. Acute prostate infections come on suddenly and have some or all of the follow symptoms: Fever and chills, pain and burning while urinating or ejaculating, strong and frequent urge to urinate while passing only small amounts of urine, lower back or abdominal pain, and occasional blood in the urine. Symptoms of chronic prostatitis are usually milder than those associated with acute infections and fever and chills are usually not present. Both an acute infection and a chronic infection can occur with a urinary tract infection.

Sometimes, men will have painful urinary symptoms without infection. This condition may be called prostatodynia and is often related to stress or anxiety. Prostate infections normally respond well to antibiotic treatments and natural supplements. If the infection recurs, long-term antibiotic treatments or a daily supplement program may be needed.

  • Hot baths can help soothe pain and reduce stress.
